Dr. Charles Bellinger Stewart Project

The Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) – Lone Star Chapter, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) – Judge Nathaniel Hart Davis Chapter, the Texas Heritage League, Children of the Republic of Texas (CRT) – Charles Stewart Chapter, the Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) – Heritage Trails Chapter, the Montgomery Heritage Museum, and the Montgomery Historical Society have joined the Montgomery County Marine Corp League #779 to build a grave site memorial marker and cemetery improvement project, honoring this great hero of Montgomery County. Dr. Stewart is interred at the New Montgomery Cemetery in Montgomery, Texas.

Dr. Stewart is credited with the original design of the state seal, as well as the Lone Star flag. Dr. Stewart assisted in penning the Texas Declaration of Independence and was the first to sign this document.  He served in three Texas Legislatures, served at the convention of 1836 and 1845, was a postmaster for Montgomery, a pharmacist, and the first "defacto" Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas.  Dr. Stewart also served as a Sergeant at the Battle of San Jacinto and Sam Houston credits him with being an interpreter between himself and Mexican President General Santa Anna after the battle of San Jacinto.

This project includes three phases.  The first phase is improvements, marker installation, flag pole, and road signage at Dr. Stewart's grave site in Montgomery, Texas.  The second phase involves the construction of a memorial on the site where Dr Stewart resided (corner of FM 2854 and Highway 105), augmenting the current marble marker.  The third phase is for a cenotaph memorial marker to be placed in the Texas State Cemetery, one plot behind Governor John Connolly’s grave site.

The dedication dates for phase I is October 18, 2008 at 10:00 AM.  Phase II and III are tentatively planned for late fall of 2008 or winter 2009 pending construction timelines.  Please contact the Sons at info@LoneStarSRT.org or visit their website (www.LoneStarSRT.org) if you would like to volunteer to help or for more details.
